Artist Statement

The last year has been about artistic exploration and evolution. Most of my paintings stem from figurative studies of models. Working with the figure, I studied classical proportion and experimented with distorting and exaggerating.. I am more concerned with what I want to convey - whether catching a lyrical pose or an attitude - than with proportional correctness . Pushing further, I played with the paint itself - letting go and trusting my eye as the layers built, exploring the effects of using everything from a hairbrush roller to wax medium.

Recently, I have been working from my subconscious, allowing the canvas to become a playground for my imagination and that of the viewer. I have also done a series of paintings that I call my "Recycle People." I create them on small canvases, using only the paint that is left on my palette at the end of the day, beyond those two constraints, it's an exercise in pure creative freedom. I paint the faces from my imagination. They reflect my inner life and state of mind, as well as the psychological echoes of literal moments in my life.

It is the things that bring me inward that inspire me - rain, Dvorak's New World Symphony, incense, poetry. It is from that place that I create.
